World Premieres Around New York
We committed to making more art this past year and are proud to say we did just that. From the first time we’ve world premiered a piece incubated through BAC: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happily Ever After to our fellows premiering their piece’s at MCC’s Robert Newman Theater during the Night of Artivism. From 4 original works commissioned for the final performance of the Arts in Action Festival to new work incubated through the Theater of Change and presented at the state capitol in Albany - BAC work was popping up all around New York.
Workshops Galore
We offered more workshops in 2023 than ever before including the fifth year of our Theater of Change course at Columbia Law School, the re-launch of our Storytelling for Social Good workshop at Tribeca Festival with our partners at Level Forward, and our complimentary Change Agent Training workshops for budding advocates in the theater industry.
Celebrations and Gatherings
Joy is a vital practice for us in this work and we made sure to find time for celebration and being in space with our community this past year.
We started off the year with a celebration of our new co-directors of programming Dria Brown and Leia Squillace, brought our alumni together for our first Alumni Picnic, created respite with a Day of Healing for industry members, brought industry leaders together for a State of the Industry and ended the year with our first ever Artivism Ball gala.
Emerging Leaders and Artists
We couldn’t do any of this without supporting young leaders and artists through it all with the third cohort of our Cody Renard Richard Scholarship, a joint produced Theatrical Happy Hour for young theater associates and producers, our Artivism Fellowship program and this summer’s What Now Unplugged featuring an incredible slate of fierce young artists like Tiffany Mann and Zhailon Levingston.

A Big Year of Impact

Adam Wassilchalk, 2023 CRR Scholar
“The Cody Renard Richard Scholarship program provided crucial support and welcomed me into a community of wonderful theatremakers who have supported me as I graduated college and started my career in New York City. The mentorship and resources from the program helped me build my own confidence and skill in a safe environment where folks were invested in my growth and success, which I’m extremely thankful for!”
Camille Thomas, 2023 Artivism Fellow
“As one of the 2023 Artivism fellows I was blown away by the lengths BAC went through to make sure that I felt fully empowered as an artist and a human to make work that allowed me to be in service to the Solutions not Suspensions bill that AQE was working on. From arranging for us to go to SPACE on Ryder farm to relax and refuel my creativity to answering my eternal questions about everything artivism and allowing me to bounce ideas off of them during my writing process BAC was always available and generous with their time, energy, and resources. Thank you SO MUCH to the Broadway Advocacy Coalition team for believing in the work that I do and allowing me to take up space as a Black artist to serve a cause that is bigger than myself.”
Anonymous, Change Agent Training Participant
“The Change Agent Training workshop was an inspirational workshop that reminded me of what theater is and could be about: creating something through a collaborative process. It reminded me that there are people out there that want to revolutionize the industry, and create a different theater.
Anonymous, Theater of Change Participant
“I feel activated in new and hopeful ways! I feel propelled to make change in ways I didn’t before the course”
